					&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Snapbot is a building toy set. It investigates the integration of
physical and digital mediums within the realm of play, addressing the
dominance of video games in
children’s entertainment. By merging my interests in toys, design,
and psychology, this project aims to balance different play medium to offer combined benefits without
diminishing each one’s value.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; To address screen time’s
dominance, I developed a toy concept
for 11- to 13-year-olds that merges
physical and digital play. This concept
allows for the physical construction of
robotic toys that, when transferred to
a digital environment, come alive and
tackle digital challenges. In this highly
informational and computationalera, my thesis seeks to leverage the
strengths of both to increase user
engagement in physical play and
promote a balance between physical
and digital entertainment, leveraging
the benefits of both worlds.

	A thesis project of RISD Master of Industrial Design in 2024


Packaging plays a large part in this project. As a toy lover, I not only want to create the physical toy, but also create the packaging to make it more fun and convincing. Before designing the package, I want to research in toy stores such as Lego, Walmart, and Game Stop. I realized toys for kids aged 9-13 has a large window to showcase what’s inside. So I came up with two solutions, a larger box as Explorer’s Pack and the bister box as Member Expansion Pack. The Explorer’s Pack contains a whole kit including the blocks, the Launch pad, and art supplies, so that the user can get a rich experience out of the box. The Member Expansion Pack&#38;nbsp; contains one set of Snapbot, it is for users who only want one more figure and some parts at a lower cost.
The design and layout of this packaging is deeply inspired by plastic model kits that is popular for age over 12. I am a huge fan of model kits so i want to bring some of the art style into kids toy. For the art, I chose 2D illustration style with thick outline, the purple theme give a gender- neutral feeling, so it can be appreciated by larger population.

All the print was made in the Design Center of RISD, I used glossy photo paper, cut and folded them to shapes. I also designed the paper rack inside the packaging, they not only add more details to the packages but also make the theme richer.

&#38;nbsp; The Pocket Board won the gold award of Graphis Design Annual 2022.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Pocket Board breaks the impression that the most traditional mechanical keyboard is bulky and big, there is no way to carry it around with ease. Our solution while retaining all the functions of a regular keyboard and reduce the size, make it small enough to fit into a pants pocket. As a tool, the Pocket Board extreme in terms of function and space-saving.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; It featres a small profile and newly designed typeface layout for ease of use, making it quick to use for users familiar with regular-sized keyboards.&#38;nbsp;
 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; I am one of the design team when I worked in Quad Creative Studio. I was in charge of the product's exterior design, and prototyping.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Meanwhile, I directed and&#38;nbsp; edited the promotional video of Pocket Board.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; This project explores the relationship between input devices and cyber-violence, attempting to improve users’ attitudes on the internet by providing a special input experience.


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Bloomy is a keyboard that transforms the typing experience and environment. I'm trying to reduce the irritation we feel when interacting with electronics, which in turn reduces the amount of negativity we spread on the internet.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; It uses parts from traditional mechanical keyboards but has a cone-like appearance that allows users to type in a more relaxed position. At the same time, a vase is embedded in the keyboard, giving this keyboard both decorative and air-improving features.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; I made the frame of the keyboard using Rhino, 3D printing and by hand. It was designed based on the dimensions of existing keyboard parts, and can be fitted with standard MX switches and keycaps.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;  After Bloomy, I designed Handshake, a smartphone case with integrated animatronic figures on the back. It can react to user’s word input and remind users about their tone by touching them.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; After all the prototyping, I created a video showing the user scenarios in my concept.

	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; This is a CNC project in my CNC class at RISD. I designed an aluminum case for the MP1 keyboard PCB by Mecx Labs. I created the CAD file with Fusion 360, and operated a 3-axis CNC in our workshop to finish the milling process.

	Wooden Keyboard Case

	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Made from a piece of Oka from the scrap bin, this case holds a normal-sized 60% keyboard component. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Based on the characteristics of the wood, my design evolved into a bulkier look to preserve the original material, while also maintaining the structure's stability. The case features an O-ring-mounted mechanism, which has been proven by the keyboard community to be a cost-effective and component-friendly choice.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The material was found in the scrap bin. It has holes and cracks, making it hard to withstand larger projects. I was drawn by the beautiful live edge and decided to turn it into a CNC project. After measuring and inspecting the cracks and holes, I found 60% keyboard components are a good fit for this piece of material.

 I designed the case with Fusion 360, tested the tolerance with 3D printing, and created the CNC program in Vectric Aspire. Finally, I used the router and orbital sander to create the rounded corner, removed the bark, and carved the USB Port with a chisel. I also designed a 3D printed adapter to hold the USB port, so I do not need to drill holes in the wood that will loosen over time. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The piece was finished with 400-grit sanding and 3 layers of oil.

	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; In this project, I made a step stool and a floor chair. The step stool is the perfect height for the side table of the floor chair.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The step stool is my first practice; it is made of Maple Wood and can be broken down into two pieces. It is not perfect for flat packaging, but I can still put it into my suitcase without sacrificing too much space.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; I designed a chair this low because I like to sit on the floor or on the ground sometimes; the change of perspective makes me refresh and come up with new ideas. So, I want to make a chair to give myself a more comfortable ground-seating environment. When fully retracted, the angle between the back and the seat is 102 degrees, which is a comfortable angle within the healthy range. The void in the middle does not affect the seating and can be a place to squeeze in a pillow for more cushion.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The Folding Chair can be competely broken down to 15 pieces, it is mainly made of Kiaat Wood, the darker material of the main back frame is Mesquite Wood. This chair will not be made without the advices and help from my teacher, Tucker Houlihan.
